Casa Patio
Historic Landmark Remodel
2017
Urban remodel of existing XIX Cent. historically protected residential landmark "Patio House". This remodel of a "casa patio" in Seville, originally built in 1905, opens the original tight spaces to bring light and confort while respecting its historical character. The original home featured thick, 24-inch limestone brick walls that served as structural load-bearing elements. These walls created a series of confined, dark spaces typical of traditional medieval houses. However, the renovation strategically preserved key architectural elements — including the entry, patio, and central staircase — to maintain the essence of the "casa patio" layout. To open up the interior, large openings were introduced in the thick walls, connecting spaces visually and allowing natural light to penetrate deeper into the home. Structural reinforcements, using heavi timber and concealed steel beams, provided the necessary support to maintain the integrity of the building while enabling these wide openings. The remodel also embraced the home's traditional materials and textures, such as exposed wooden beams and brickwork, while incorporating modern elements like glass partitions, sleek lighting fixtures, and contemporary furnishings. This creates a harmonious balance between old and new. The use of neutral tones, natural materials, and reflective surfaces further enhances the sense of spaciousness, resulting in a bright and inviting living space. This thoughtful renovation breathes new life into a historic home while preserving its authentic Andalusian charm.
